Soul Search interview
photo is by flickr user birddog14.
With so much shit coming out of places like Richmond, New York and Texas, let's not forget the kickass bands coming from the West Coast. Soul Search is a California band that plays heavy New York style hardcore. They've got a demo out now that has been blowing up over the past year and they're playing United Blood in April so keep your eyes on this band. This interview is with their drummer, Dorian.
So first off, how does it feel to be on the United Blood line-up with Breakdown, Death Threat, Max Pen and about a million other top notch bands?
It feels great man. We are stoked that we finally get to see some bands we thought we wouldn't ever see.
On that note, is there any band you're most amped to play with at UB?
Definately man, there is a couple actually, Breakdown, Maximum Penalty, No Values, & Stick Together, just to name a few.
Soul Search has a record coming out soon on Triple B. What can kids expect from it and what's the band doing differently since the demo?
Well all I can say is expect the same sound, just a little heavier...
How did Soul Search come together and what bands were you guys listening to when the band was first starting?
We started early last year. I was introduced to our original guitarist by a mutual friend. When I met him, he had been wanting a start a band heavily influenced by NYHC. So we talked and jammed a couple of times, but nothing really happened. We kept jamming and began to actually write, so I hit up Omar to do vocals. Once that happened we pretty much kicked the writing process into full gear and wrote our first demo. We hit up our friend Chad to fill in for bass for a bit since we didn't really know who to hit up to play bass for us, but he actually just stuck around and we kept him in the band and that was it, our lineup was complete. It wasn't really what we were listening to, it was more like what we wanted to sound like, I think its safe to say we wanted to sound like DMIZE when we first started out.
I think it's awesome that the demo came out on cassette, any particular reason you chose that format?
No particular reason really. When we finished the demo, I sent it to one of my friends in Europe via email. He was really into it and had just started a label, so he pretty much asked me if he could put it out on tape, I said sure, why not.
Where in California are you guys from and what's the scene like over there?
We are all from the Inland Empire...Corona/Riverside/Rancho Cucamonga, except for Ricky, he's from Azusa, I think that's considered Los Angeles county, but don't quote me on that haha. The scene in California is pretty cool. There's alot of good bands out right now and more new bands coming out as well. Alot of the shows i've been too lately have been a little more packed, more than usual, and I'm starting to see alot of new faces which is really cool.
Anything else you wanna add?
Our new 7" will be out in June on Triple B Records.
