Bust It Interview

Bust It! plays aggressive, chaotic, 80's influenced, not-quite-youth-crew-but-sorta (and definitely minus the positive attitude) style hardcore. In other words, it's fast as fuck but still coherent and immediately gives me visions of show spaces erupting. They've been together for a few years now and are currently on a big ol' tour of the country. Florida kids, check em out at a free show in Orlando. This interview is with Coy, who plays guitar.

How's the tour going thus far?
Pretty good. We played the first few dates in Boston and RI with our friends in Choke Up and the Greek Favorites and I got to see Blood for Blood on our day off so I can't think of a better way to start things.

How long has Bust It been together and what have you released?
We actually started playing back in 2008 with me on vocals and put out two demos that way as a 4 piece. I am, however, not really a frontman and Jim (our other guitarist) and I were writing songs that needed two guitars, so I picked up an axe and we got Brett to come in on vocals. Since then we have put out a new 7in called "Hell is Other People" which is now out on Get Young Records.

Describe the band's sound for kids who haven't heard it yet.
Well, we play fast. We kind of want everything to sound like a burst of negative energy barely constrained by the confines of song and teetering on the brink of collapse. Some of it has catchy parts, some of it has hard parts, but all of it is high energy. We also don't really like playing the same riff too much so a lot of our songs follow a linear progression.

How long have you been into hardcore/ punk and what was the scene like when you first got into it? What's are some changes you've noticed since then?
I first started going to shows in like 2000-2001 and back then hardcore shows were really violent and more metal influenced in CT so a lot of us came up in the punk scene seeing bands like Toxic Narcotic and A Global Threat. Now a lot of the really violent shit has gone away in CT and there's a lot less distinction between hardcore and punk rock. I also remember when you couldn't download a bands album, and you would only know about a show if you got a flier handed to you, so the internet has been a huge game changer.

I saw that one of the shows on the tour is with DRI, FU's and Anal Cunt (though I assume they aren't playing anymore because their vocalist is dead). How's it feel to be playing with some legendary acts like those guys?
My feeling about playing with legendary acts is that I'm stoked to see them play for free. A lot of the time the bigger acts never watch the opening bands so it's not really like we're playing to them. We just play to the people who are there as hard as we can no matter who we play with.

What's next for the band?
After we get back from tour we're going to finish up the full length we've been writing for the past couple of months and try to hit the studio sometime late summer- early fall. After that we plan on touring every time our school and work schedules will allow us to.

Anything else you wanna add - shout outs, closing thoughts?
A) Yeah, I'd like to give a shout out to Governor Dan Malloy. He may be a patsy for big business like all the other crooks they have in charge of my state, but at least he has the commons sense to recognize the futility of prohibition and make moves to de-criminalize marijuana. Drug laws don't protect anybody but criminals.
